There is little doubt that Republicans have their fair share of challenges in the upcoming election year, but some interesting things have occured that have gone with little reporting. One is the Congressional numbers that I found over at McLean County Pundit. Most political junkies know the approval rating of Congress is in the toliet. That's not what I'm talking about. Generic ballot polling has Republicans on the uptick for the first time in 16 months. See here.
Now on the Presidential front the focus has been where the Republicans are on immigration. More specifically where the candidates stand in contrast to the President. The media loves the quick compare and contrast article. It's one of the easier ones to write. But now we realize the Democrats (HT Powerline) are holding a bomb in their hands as well. So much that it is being termed "The Rainbow Coalition Evaporates."
Which is the title of an article in the Manhattan Institutes City Journal. Read more here. So you have African-Americans mad at each other for the Congressional Black caucus supporting immigration reform. You have African-Americans mad at Hillary for her comments on Dr. King, plus Bill roughing up Obama with "fairy tale" talk from the stump. You have main line Black leaders backing Hilliary instead of Obama which the younger blacks don't understand. And over the top of it you have Hispanics with their traditional dislike of the Africian American community and as the New York Times pointed out, again thanks Powerline, Obama struggled in Nevada because of the Hispanic division between it and the African American community.
And we Republicans thought we had troubles with a Mormon, a Baptist preacher and a couple divorced guys running for President. My prediction, in the end they will all come together, but that really dosen't matter. Wasting energy now can in the end hurt both parties. Hopefully the GOP can get together behind a candidate and we'll let the Dems stew, spin, point fingers at and hopefully lose in the end.
